Quick answer: Facebook Lead Ads let people send you their details through a form that opens inside Facebook, already filled in from their profile, so they never leave the app. The catch is that leads are stored in Facebook until you fetch them, and a manual CSV download every few days means slow replies. Connect the form to your CRM, email marketing tool or inbox with a built in CRM integration, a connector such as Zapier, or a custom integration through Facebook’s API, so every lead arrives within minutes and gets a quick response.
Facebook introduced Lead Ads to all advertisers last October, and they have quickly become popular with businesses that collect enquiries, quote requests, newsletter sign ups and event registrations. On a phone, filling in a form on a slow loading landing page is a chore. A lead ad removes most of that effort: two taps and the details are sent. More people complete the form, but the speed and quality of your follow up decide whether those leads turn into anything.
How Facebook Lead Ads work
- Someone sees your ad in their news feed, mainly on mobile.
- They tap the call to action button, such as “Sign Up”, “Get Quote” or “Learn More”.
- A form opens inside Facebook. Fields such as name, email address and phone number are filled in from their Facebook profile.
- They check the details, answer any extra questions you have added, and submit.
- The lead is stored against your Facebook Page, ready for you to collect.
Because the form is pre filled and never leaves Facebook, it works well on phones, where typing is slow and pages load slowly on mobile data.
Setting up a lead ad
Create the form
You build the lead form as part of creating the ad in Power Editor or Ads Manager. You choose:
- The fields to collect. Facebook offers standard fields like name, email, phone, city, company and job title, and you can add custom questions.
- A context card, an optional intro screen explaining what the person gets by signing up.
- Your privacy policy link, which is required. Make sure it explains how you will use the data.
- A thank you screen with a link to your website.
Ask only what you need
Each extra field reduces the number of people who complete the form, but too few fields and you may struggle to qualify leads. A name, email and phone number plus one qualifying question, such as the service they want or their postcode, is a good starting point for most service businesses.
Choose your audience and budget
Targeting works the same way as other Facebook ads: location, age, interests, Custom Audiences built from your customer list, and lookalike audiences.
The problem: leads sitting in Facebook
By default, leads stay in Facebook. You can download them as a CSV file from your Page’s Publishing Tools, under the forms library, but:
- Someone has to remember to do it.
- Leads may wait hours or days before anyone sees them.
- The CSV then has to be imported into your CRM or email tool by hand.
- Facebook only keeps leads available to download for a limited time, so a forgotten form can mean lost leads.
Speed matters with enquiries. Someone who filled in a form a minute ago remembers you and is probably still thinking about the problem. Three days later, they may have called a competitor or forgotten they asked. Automating the handover is the single most useful thing you can do with lead ads.
Ways to send leads to your systems automatically
Built in CRM integrations
Facebook worked with a number of CRM and marketing platforms when it launched lead ads, including Salesforce, MailChimp, Marketo and others, plus specialist partners. If your system is on the list, you can usually connect it from inside that system’s settings or Facebook’s lead ads setup and map the form fields to your CRM fields.
Zapier
If your CRM is not a direct partner, Zapier has a Facebook Lead Ads trigger. You connect your Facebook Page, choose the form, and set up actions for each new lead, such as:
- Create a contact in your CRM.
- Add the person to an email list.
- Send an email or text alert to the sales team.
- Add a row to a Google Sheet as a backup log.
This needs no code and suits most small and medium businesses. Our Zapier guide explains the basics of setting up zaps.
A custom integration
Facebook provides a Lead Ads API and real time updates through webhooks. A developer can build an integration that receives each lead the moment it is submitted and sends it into your own systems, with any checks or routing you need. This is worth considering when you run many forms, have your own CRM or database, or need complex rules such as sending leads to different branches by postcode.
Make the follow up fast and useful
Once leads arrive automatically, set up the next steps so they happen without anyone remembering:
- An instant email reply confirming you have their request and what happens next.
- An alert to the right person by email or in your team chat, with the lead’s details.
- A task in your CRM to call within a set time, such as the same working day.
- A short follow up sequence for people who do not respond to the first contact. Our guide to marketing automation covers how to plan these.
Tag every lead with its source and form name, so you can later see which campaigns bring leads that actually become customers.
Keep the data clean
Lead ads make it easy to submit, which brings some low quality leads: people who tapped by mistake, or whose Facebook profile has an old email address. A few habits help:
- Add one qualifying question so you can sort serious enquiries quickly.
- Call or email promptly, and treat unreachable leads as such rather than chasing them for weeks.
- De duplicate by email or phone number when leads enter your CRM.
- Respect consent. People agreed to hear from you about what the form offered. Do not add them to unrelated mailing lists without clear permission.
Measure what matters
Facebook will report the number of leads and the cost per lead. That is only half the picture. The useful number is the cost per customer, which you can only see if your CRM records which leads came from which form and whether they bought. Compare that with the cost of leads from your website and other channels.
If you also run ads that send people to your website, the Facebook pixel lets you track those conversions on your own pages. Our guide to workflow automation has more ideas for joining these steps up across the office.
FAQ
Do lead ads work on desktop?
They are designed mainly for mobile, where the pre filled form saves the most effort. Check Facebook’s current placement options when you set up a campaign.
Can I edit a lead form after it is live?
Forms cannot be changed once used in a live ad. Create a new form and attach it to the ad instead.
Are lead ads better than sending people to my website?
Not always. They often produce more leads at a lower cost, but sometimes of lower quality. Test both and compare the cost per customer.
